“Practically perfect.”

My university friend and I travelled from Cusco to do the 2 day/ 3 night tour provided by Tarantula eco-tours. I have recommended it to everyone I know already. We arrived by flight; the lodge is a very short tuk tuk ride from Puerto airport.
- I advise that you get your own taxi; the lodge will pay for it on your arrival.
- Also, bring a backpack rather than any other form of luggage. We had breakfast as soon as we arrived, and then hiked 2km to Maloka lodge, where we stayed (even though we thought we were staying at Tarantula lodge).
The lodge was extremely comfortable, and we had the dining room all to ourselves. The food was fresh and tasty, and they did mostly very well to provide for special diets (vegetarian and gluten free) The staff at both Maloka and Tarantula were helpful, friendly, and made us feel at home. We played card games and drank cocktails in the evenings.
There is little electricity connection here, so make sure devices are fully charged. Power comes on for an hour at midday, and from 6pm to 9pm. It is worth bringing a torch for night explorations also.
Whatever your age, or the size of your tour group, I recommend requesting ESAUU OCHOA as your tour guide. He was exceptional: knowledgeable, friendly, respectful, fun, and spoke very good English. He even helped us hire motorbikes on our last morning, and showed us how to ride them. We had a fantastic time whizzing 'round Puerto Maldonando before our flight left for Cusco.
The lake and hikes were incredibly beautiful. We went in April, which is just outside of high season, and we had the lake and lodge to ourselves. More generally, I was amazed at how authentic everything seemed - it is well preserved. There are no horrid tourist gift shops or gimmicks. You're guaranteed to learn a lot and fall in love with the place!

“Great eco-tour in the jungle with a fabulous guide”

Reviewed July 24, 2013

My friend Sarah and I wanted a true adventure in the jungle, and were wary of so many online or even in travel guides that seemed lame. Well, we had a great adventure at the tarantula lodge. The hostel was totally fine. It was clean, the food was great, there is wifi. But we were able to book a tour through the hostel to lake sandoval. it was amazing - we had to hike through the jungle to get to our lodging, we canoed around the lake, we saw monkeys and giant river otters, huge fish, caiman, dozens of birds -- all in the wild, not in a conservatory. It was epic. Great place and not overrun with tourists! It was also an amazing price.
